The book landed at my door yesterday, I ordered a hard copy because I wanted to flip through the pages, The book is of very high standard printing, with top of the notch photos, classic dark backgrounds, although some of the pieces are modern, the overall feeling is a very established one. The book is mainly a portfolio, so if you were wondering about "how to" tips I'm afraid you might be disappointed, there are only 8 or so pages with very general technical explanations, that will probably not add too much to what most people working with wire already know. Although I knew it was not a how to book, I was hoping for a few more secrets shared.But the sensation of flipping through the pages of her work and seeing every little stitch is very enjoyable to me, I'm very glad I bought it :) !I "discovered" Mary Lee Hu while browsing through my Arline Fisch book about textile metal working, I realized she uses a technique similar to my favorite Invisible spool knitting wire crochet technique.I was hoping to find the designs that are executed in the invisible spool knitting technique, but out of dozens of pieces presented in the book only 2 are knitted, apparently not her top favorite technique.She refrains to it as French knitting with no spool, sounds quite similar to invisible spool knitting. I bought this book because I am working on beaded bangles this year and I've been stymied by the need for more structure in my designs. This book has many excellent designs for bracelets, earrings and neckpieces, all made with precious metal wire. There are a couple of interesting essays about the artist's journey to where she is today. There is even some information about how to work in wire, although a lot of the beauty of the artist's work is due to the integration of the wire with custom forged connectors and clasps, which is not discussed. I missed this exhibit at the Bellevue Arts Museum but it was still very worthwhile to get the book.
Mary's book is overflowing with grace and beauty. She takes gold to another dimension, that she has exploredand mastered. She loved teaching...it was a great travesty, for the University of Washington, to eliminate theiramazing jewelry program, so masterfully taught by Mary. Her new adventures with Wally will take her to future heights.
I have always admired Mary Lee Hu's work and was delighted to find a book devoted to her art. There were plenty of photos and interesting information.

I found this wonderful artist's work and then looked on Amazon to see if she had a book. The book was very informative about her background and her processes of design. The photographs of her work are wonderful. I was inspired by her wire work and loved this book.

Her work is elegant, fun and masterfully executed. The production values of the publication are top notch. The only thing better is seeing her work in person and wearing it!
