Well written very interesting facts about many instances and descriptions in scripture that need a further cultural explanation to make them even more meaningful. She lived in Israel during the 1930's and found so many things to be very very similar to the culture of Bible times both in Jesus day and in David's day. For example descriptions of the veil commonly worn or the potter and his craft - Joseph's coat of many colors was probably a mistranslation and it wasn't the colors that made his brothers jealous enough to kill him, but rather the design of long sleeves that meant Jacob viewed Joseph as his heir or firstborn - as he was first born of Rachel, the chosen wife of Jacob.....
The subject matter is excellent! It explains so many unknown things that it will make reading the Bible so much more enjoyable and comprehensible. If you are interested in scripture and/or the Bible, this is really a must have title!
This is such a cool book to have. I bought one for myself and two for gifts. It helps scripture come alive as you learn the customs back then. I especially love page 10 about the history of the tear bottle. I highly recommend this book for those that live history and study the Bible.
Enjoyed this book. Like the other reviewers said it does open one's understanding of the hidden meanings in certain phrases. I loved the tear bottle illustration -- I had always wondered how a woman could cry enough to wash dirty feet and this makes sense. Also the different explanations concerning the vessels and relating it to the Bible about vessels of honor etc are very informative. Buy this for your ministerial student, your pastor -- they will especially enjoy it. But it is also a nice devotional type for the layperson as well. Anyone who loves the Bible will enjoy this book.
I really liked the insight this book gave me in teaching Bible. There are so many things in the Bible that we can understand more clearly, if we understand the culture of the time and of the people. My favorite is the explanation of "tear bottle." One of my favorite scriptures is Psalm 56:8 "You have taken account of my wanderings; Put my tears in Your bottle. Are they not in Your book?"
It was a book my grandson son requested, and was very happy with it.
It's a dated book but does give a view of middle eastern culture. Enjoyed.
