I enjoyed this book and read it cover to cover in just a few sittings. However, you have to enjoy this book for what it is and not be disappointed by what it isn't. This book is an exciting political and military thriller that'd be at home next to the best works of Tom Clancy. This book is not an historical reference book.Here's the actual history that we know. In March of 1968 a Soviet ballistic missile sub, the K-129, sank in the Pacific Ocean and there were no survivors. Despite a large scale search and rescue effort by Soviet forces they were unable to locate their sunken submarine. Thanks to a host of technologies the United States was able to locate the wreck of the Soviet submarine. It was thoroughly documented via photographs and some debris was recovered. This effort reached its zenith in 1974 when Project Azorian (mistakenly referred to as Project Jennifer by the author) attempted to raise the entire submarine off the ocean floor using a specially built ship called the Hughes Glomar Explorer. The success of that effort is open to some debate. Both the US and Russian authorities have made only limited public statements about these events and they remain among the most highly classified events that occurred during the Cold War.The author presents the hypothesis that the Soviet submarine was in fact on a rogue mission to launch a ballistic missile at the US Navy Base at Pearl Harbor. In this hypothesis, the author indicates that the rogue entities within the KGB designed this mission to implicate China in the nuclear destruction of Pearl Harbor in order to start a devastating war between the United States and China. This would eliminate two major foes of the Soviet Union simultaneously. I daresay that the authors hypothesis, as presented, is plausible. However, the distance between plausible and likely is wide and filled with hearsay and highly circumstantial evidence.My only real complaint is the authors tendency to present hearsay and conjecture as absolute fact. Additionally, in one breath he'll condemn an official government position as part of the cover up and in another he'll use that same position to support his own conclusions.I enjoyed the book tremendously despite its flaws. It presented a very interesting hypothesis which seems to fit much of the circumstantial evidence surrounding the sinking and recovery of this submarine. While the author presents his conclusions as fact, I suggest that the reader maintain a more critical mindset while reading this book and formulate their own conclusions about the plausibility and likelihood that the events actually transpired as the author describes.
Detailed and gripping examination of the technological and political evidence that a Soviet submarine manned by renegade military officers intent on nullifying Brezhnev's effort to defuse the Cold War. Many stories like this of close calls averted during the era when "mutual assured destruction" wove through all of our lives -- but among the many ways that this story is unique, the reason that this incident did not lead to nuclear holocaust is the most chilling I have read.
A totally spellbinding account of an untold event that would have drastically changed the world we live in. Having been in the service during this time period and working in communications for an "alphabet agency", I recall some of the information in this book, especially concerning the capture of the Pueblo and its cache of crypto equipment. As for the Russian sub and its probable mission, not a peep. Highly compartmentalized information. I highly recommend this book.
March 7, 1968 was the day that our world almost ended. Or not. In the shadow world of secret operations facts are distorted--deliberately.I gave this book only four stars because of the authors using "clandestine" incorrectly on page 272. A US Navy submariner would call clandestine "an operation that didn't happen" and call covert "he did it, not me." Kenneth Sewell claims that one of the founders of the USSR used an elderly Golf II class submarine in an attempt to trick the United States into nuking China--and this false flag operation failed because the USA had far better surveillance technology than expected AND because a fail-safe in the nuclear warhead destroyed the missile in the silo (and sinking K-129). Murdering an estimated 500,000 people outright and laying waste to Oahu isn't "clandestine;" people are going to notice something like that.On the other hand the multiple investigation, recovery and diplomatic operations do fit the "clandestine" definition. The authors allege that a cover-up of those operations is still going on (as of 2005 and 2006, the publishing dates of this book).An interesting comparison of US versus USSR nuclear war capabilities during the 1960s is on pages 252 and 253.This book is worth reading despite the warts. If you believe that history is over--or that the past is dead--"Red Star Rogue" will demonstrate otherwise.
Honestly, I'm not certain that I beleive that the KGB took over a submarine and attempted to launch a nuclear weapon at Pearl Harbor. Who knows.The US may also have sunk K129.Not as much fun to read as "Blind Man's Bluff" or "Command and Control", but OK
This is a disturbing book. I acknowledge that there are bad actors in world politics. But I find it hard to accept that so many came so close to causing WWIII. So let's say the authors are half right, what do we take away? What I took away is that we are too trusting of our elected leaders. What has to supported is a free and independent media collection. A free press is our best defense from over teaching ambitions and devious behavior.
This book reads like a thriller, but trust me as someone who was there it is factual and really makes the issue as to how we came so close the WWIII. I recommend this to book to anyone. It is a real eye opener and makes the point for good leadership and how easy, without good leadership, we could end up in a devastating war.
